Legend of Robin Hood in Nottingham

Discover the Legend of Robin Hood in Nottingham

Just as the Robin Hood Way runs through Nottingham, the history of Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men is at the heart of the city.

The first reference in print to the English folklore legend Robin Hood dates all the way back to 1377. This is testament to how the tale of this outlaw has captured imaginations for centuries. Even to this day, the story of the green-clad antihero is one of the most popular tales ever told, both in print and on the big & small screen. The question of whether Robin actually existed has divided historians. The Hollywood version of him who captured the heart of Maid Marian is a myth, but it’s thought by some that his story is based on the exploits of a real person.
Pose with Robin Hood at Nottingham Castle

The Robin Hood statue outside Nottingham Castle’s gatehouse, is the most photographed landmark in the city, so you can get the perfect snapshot of you and Robin. Legend has it that Robin Hood would have been brought to Nottingham Castle when captured as the Sheriff of Nottingham used it as a court. The network of caves underneath the castle would have presented an ideal escape route when the Merry Men came to the rescue! This story is brought to life with unmissable Robin Hood cave tours.
A Merry Town Tour

To top it off, you’ll finish by enjoying an ale at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, reputed to be England’s oldest pub.
The Legend of Sherwood Forest
Thanks to its place in folklore as the home of Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest isn’t just beautiful, it’s world famous. This 450 acre green oasis is a must-visit destination on your Robin-Hood themed adventure. This is where Robin is reputed to have evaded the authorities, romanced Maid Marian and got up to high jinks with his band of Merry Men. Don’t miss the Major Oak, a tree that is estimated to be between 800 and 1000 years old and is known as the place where Robin took shelter from his pursuers and slept alongside his Merry Men. St Mary’s Church in the Sherwood Forest village of Edwinstowe dates back to 1175 and is said to be the setting of Robin Hood and Maid Marian’s marriage.
