Hôtel de la Croix-Rousse: on the Lyonnais silk road

Scaling the colourful slopes of Croix-Rousse
Close to the Croix-Rousse hillside, the Mercure Lyon Centre Beaux Arts hotel is 3 metro stops away from the historical account silk quarter. Our team is there to guide you before you explore the high place of Lyon’s past.
The canuts heritage, not far from the Hôtel de la Croix-Rousse
Bear in mind that the Croix-Rousse hill has a 250 metre incline over a short climb. So if you don’t feel like the climb up the very steep slopes, we suggest you take the metro up to the high part of the district. From the Croix-Rousse station, you can visit the area on foot, and then descend at your own pace via the ramps and staircases bordered by multicoloured houses. Take the Grande Côte: a spectacular panorama of the city and the surrounding area awaits you a the top. From there, drop by to see Saint-Bruno-les-Chartreux baroque church, the Villa Gillet surrounded by the parc de la Cerisaie, or Saint-Jean’s fort which overlooks the Saone.
Not far from your Croix-Rousse hotel, you’ll discover an astonishing building, called the Maison with its 365 windows. On the edge of place Rouville, this building once housed the looms of the weavers who lived in this district, once dedicated to silk manufacture. In the rue d’Ivry, the Maison des canuts museum pays tribute to this craft. Here, you will find a boutique selling silk scarves, stoles and ties. These accessories are emblematic of this quarter, so why not treat yourself to a bit of shopping! A few streets away, la Cour des Voraces, established in an old building, exhibits information about one of the workers’ revolts against the harsh working conditions of the 19th century.
