Erfurt

Open Book Telefonzelle, Magdeburger Allee 116, 99086 Erfurt

It's tall and thin, bright green, and now part and parcel of the Erfurt landscape. Everyone's talking about the Open Book Telefonzelle, an old telephone box that now serves as a mini-library for bookworms and curious types. It hasn't been used to make calls since 2011. Since then, the green old lady has been looked after by local volunteers and users. The rules are simple: if you take a book, you leave another in its place. If you like it, you can keep it. Or you can stay and read it there – there's room inside for one to sit. Don’t leave it too late though: the mini-library closes in the late afternoon.
