THE MILE OF FAME

THE MILE OF FAME

Bari

Teatro Petruzzelli - Corso Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour

The Miglio dei teatri (mile of theaters) is a secret unknown even to most of the locals. In the 1920s, the city was famous on a national level for its drama production: Bari hosted a grand total of 10 theaters in the space of just one mile. The Trianon theater hosted variety shows, the Kursaal Santalucia – currently closed for restoration – welcomed amateur artists, and in the Teatro Margherita plays were performed on a stage suspended on water. A very young Totò performed at the Teatro La Fenice, while his first movies were shot at the Garibaldi.
The city has staged and lived innumerable stories, and despite also surviving a fire, the Petruzzelli theatre still carries forward the theatrical tradition of Bari with its opera and ballet program.
