Figueira da Foz

Armazéns de Lavos, Lavos, 3090-451 Figueira da Foz

The Núcleo Museológico do Sal (Salt Museum Centre) is a fascinating museum opened in 2007 as a testimony to the relationship between the people and the salt pans of Figueira da Foz. The museum’s permanent attractions include exhibits on the history of salt in Portugal, as well as a bird observatory overlooking the saltworks. There are also two giant fibreglass flamingos by sculptor António Faustino. The Núcleo Museológico do Mar (Sea Museum Centre) was inaugurated in 2003 to conserve the region’s maritime history and the artisan fishing practices of the coastline communities around Figueira da Foz. After visiting, why not head to a nearby restaurant for one of the region’s renowned (and delicious) cod dishes?
