MYSTERY DUTCH TILEWORK

Figueira da Foz

Estr. da Junceira Paço de Ilhas, R. de São Sebastião 2, 2640-825 Ericeira

Casa do Paço is one of Figueira da Foz’s more curious attractions. Dating from the 18th century, the interior is decorated with one of the largest collections of Dutch figurative tiles in the world. No-one is entirely sure how these tiles came to be housed here, but legend has it that they were recovered from a Dutch frigate shipwrecked off the coast in 1706. The collection today comprises some 6,700 tiles displayed in several rooms and according to three themes: typical Dutch landscapes, Biblical scenes and horsemen engaged in battle. There’s also one tile that has been placed upside down on the wall – although you’ll need to look long and hard to find it!
