WALKING THROUGH GLASGOW'S HERITAGE

Glasgow

Dumbarton Rd

During the 1850s, the Industrial Revolution led to rapid urban growth. Dreadful living conditions and plenty of grime accompanied the expansion. To give the working class a green space in which to play and enjoy the outdoors, the city of Glasgow began buying swaths of land around the River Kelvin. Thus was born Kelvingrove Park. To explore this beloved Victorian public garden, take a walk along the heritage trail. Highlights include the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and the triple-arched Snow Bridge. Discover the magnificent Stewart Memorial Fountain, topped by Sir Walter Scott’s Lady of the Lake. A bronze statue depicts Lord Kelvin (William Thomson), who described the absolute temperature scale now known as the Kelvin Scale.
