A THOUSAND YEARS OF MILLING

St Albans

Redbournbury Mill, Redbournbury Lane, Redbourn Road, St Albans

Take a trip back through 1,000 years of history at Redbournbury Watermill and Bakery, the last working mill on the River Ver. The mill’s exact age isn’t known, but it’s mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1087. Over the centuries it went through numerous owners, among them Henry VIII, the later Elizabeth I, and the splendidly named Sir Harbottle Grimston - before it eventually fell into disuse in the 1950s. After a fire in 1987, the mill’s present owners restored it to working order. Today, it produces stone-ground organic flour - which you can taste in the adjacent bakery’s delicious breads.
