Eating out in York

Sampling the Restaurant Scene in York

Not only is York a world-beating city for sightseeing, it’s a deliciously impressive gastro destination too.

When it comes to nice places to eat in York, you’ll be spoiled for choice, no matter what your taste or budget allows for. From traditional pub dining featuring fish and chips and the famous Yorkshire pudding, to gourmet meals and mouth-watering cuisine from all over the world, this city offers something to tantalise everyone’s taste buds. York’s ancient cobbled lanes and alleyways provide the perfect setting for the many bistro-style restaurants you’ll come across, which offer a friendly and delicious welcome to tired tourists and hungry locals alike. Whether you’re a family, a couple or a group of friends, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for when it comes to your perfect meal out in York.
Oshibi Korean Bistro
Tucked away in a tranquil courtyard near Fossgate, Oshibi is where East meets West in the form of delicious Korean cuisine. If you don’t know what bibimbap, kimbap or sundubu jjigae are, this is the place to enjoy sampling them for the first time. Oshibi may be no frills in terms of décor and atmosphere, but what it lacks in luxury, it makes up for with delicious dishes like pork and vegetable dumplings, Korean pancakes, crispy seafood and sesame steak. If you’ve worked up an appetite and have booked for a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, you can treat yourself to the excellent value Korean BBQ set menu where you choose the meat or seafood you fancy and have a go at barbequing it yourself on a grill surface at your table.
Delrio’s Restaurant
Delicious and authentic Italian food never goes out of favour, and to prove it, Delrio’s has been known as one of the best places to eat in York city centre for well over two decades. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic margherita pizza, freshly prepared with basil and mozzarella, a traditional tagliatelle carbonara or are tempted to go on a culinary adventure with baby octopus or fresh Whitby crab with an Italian twist, Delrio’s Restaurant will get your taste buds tingling in incredible Italian style. The menu is full of tempting dishes, so it’s best to order a glass of prosecco and take your time deciding! This little gem of a restaurant has a cosy, candlelit atmosphere so it’s very popular with couples, but groups of families and friends love it too.
Star Inn in the City
York boasts numerous places to sample traditional English cooking, but for the ultimate in expertly cooked traditional Yorkshire fare with a modern twist, look no further than the Star Inn in the City. Keep it simple with a starter of Yorkshire pudding followed by Yorkshire beer-battered cod, or try something different with gin-cured salmon followed by pan roast saddle of venison. Either way, you’ll soon see why Star Inn in the City is one of York’s hottest dining spots. However, what makes it truly special is its stunning location in the old Engine House in the city’s museum gardens. A modern conservatory-style dining room with gorgeous views of the River Ouse adds even more style to what is already a class act.
The Go Down
As the name suggests, you have to descend some steps to get to this family-run fine dining restaurant in the city centre, but when you taste the food on offer, you’ll be very glad you did. English cooking with influences from around the world is always on the menu here, and you can explore a la carte or opt for the great value set menus which are available at certain times. Think posh wild boar bangers served with potato and celeriac mash or minted lamb rump with a redcurrant and mint reduction followed by mouth-watering puddings like chocolate pavlova or mango and passion fruit cheesecake. Add to that a bottle of something delicious and you’re all set to savour the ultimate in gourmet feasting in York.
