Sebastiana de Mello Freire, known as Yayá, was the last resident of the place, acquired by her caretakers after being judged as incapable of administering her inherited fortune, at the age of 31. She lived in recluse in the mansion that today is a symbol of eclectic architecture. Classified since 1998, it's currently managed by the Centro de Preservação Cultural da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) (Cultural Preservation Center of the University of São Paulo).
