On your next visit to Florence, as you cross the downtown streets, keep a close eye on the street signs. Some of the ones you will see will strike you as original at the least! The credit goes to Clet Abraham, native of Bretagne (France) but an honorary Florentine, who has used removable stickers to turn the bland street signs into true works of art. One-way, no entry, and parking signs came to life as anticonformism and freedom messages, though remaining legible for road safety purposes. Just why did Clet choose street signs to express his art? “Man is fantasy and emotion – he says – while a street sign is just a rule to passively conform to. With my stickers I give it new meanings and make the universally recognized cold symbol something more humane.” Talk about street art!
