THE SICILIAN CART

THE SICILIAN CART

Palermo

Lungomare Peppino Impastato, Terrasini

When you think back about Sicily, you will certainly think about that little and multi-colored pushcart because, without a doubt, it is among its most distinguishing historic symbols. Its birth coincided with the economic development of the island, when the tradesmen relied on these innovative modes of transportation to carry their goods to destination. Their folkloristic side – the decorations and painted figures – had a double purpose: ornamental and narrative. They represented key moments in Sicilian history, religious scenes and patterns which also served as good luck: given the terrible conditions of the Sicilian roads, getting from point A to point B was considered a “miracle” by the carrettieri (the “cart-bearers”). To this day, these masterpieces of handcraft roll across the downtown streets, but if you want to know more, make a stop at the Museo del Carretto Siciliano (Sicilian cart museum), in the nearby Terrasini.
