Rimini

Lungomare - Viale Amerigo Vespucci 18

Although bathing in the Riviera romagnola (the Romagna region’s coastline) was already a common habit of the Romans, the first to enjoy its salty water, the predecessor of all beach resorts was founded by a Riminese doctor in 1843. The structure was a stilt house on water, with cabins and connected to the beach by a boardwalk. This innovation, copied by many other beaches nationwide, was improved by the addition of a bar and restaurant, men’s and women’s changing rooms, a sunroof, and leisure areas. In 1929 the changing rooms were moved to the beach, parallel to the water, and the bathers started leaving the platform, which simply became a walking space from which to admire the sea. When the platform was demolished, Rimini had already become the capital of beach tourism.
