HISTORY OF THE CITY
Taranto
Museo spartano e Palazzo de Beaumont Bonelli - Corso Vittorio Emanuele II 39
The interesting thing about the Bonelli Palace is that the structure contains traces from all historic and artistic periods relating to the city. Starting from its name. The hypogeum is a cavity dug into calcarenite rock, used by Spartans as material for building the city from 700 anno domini.
The underground spaces have been used in various ways over time and now show the remains of a Graeco-Roman necropolis. Climbing 16 metres to street level, you find the patrician palace from 1600, lived in by the Beaumont Bonelli family until 1900.
The Beaumont Bonelli building contains the whole history of Taranto.
