ONE MAN’S CASTLE

ONE MAN’S CASTLE

Bristol

Black Castle Public House, Bath Road | Bristol City Centre, Bristol

The History of Architecture
At first glance, Black Castle Public House certainly looks like a castle. And yet… It has all the right bits and bobs, but something is off. What exactly? First, the colour. The castle is painted black and white. Next, the blocks are not actually stone. Built sometime between 1745 and 1755 for William Reaves, the castle is made of copper-slag blocks painted black with white borders. Why the deception? Simply because Reaves was the owner of a local smelting plant, and wished to advertise its services. Clever. Today the building has been transformed into a tavern. Under large medieval chandeliers, you can order some beautiful cuts of meat. Not to worry, the food is real.
