A ROYAL CAP FROM A FATEFUL DAY

Farnham

38 West Street

A key piece of history lies in the Museum of Farnham. Enter the Georgian townhouse. Go upstairs. Find a wooden box. Pull back its red curtain to reveal the treasure inside - a cap belonging to King Charles I. Its significance? Charles gave the cap to the owner of a Farnham manor house, where the king spent his last night on Earth in 1649. The cap was gifted just before Charles departed for London to face execution during the English Civil War. His death effectively ended the era of the divine right of kings. For more, stroll down the street to Vernon House. There, a plaque on the manor house wall marks the spot where Charles I spent his final morning.
