Farnham

Charles Hill, Tilford

You can thank carrots for The Donkey. Or at least, for the name of the watering hole that’s been serving since 1850. Why? The area’s sandy soil led to a boom in carrot farming. Crops were hauled in carts that passed the tavern, originally called The Half-way House. In front, donkeys would be tethered, waiting to help loads up the hill. They earned the pub a nickname - made official 100 years later. Today, you can enjoy classic British cuisine, fine wine and a beer garden complete with two donkeys. Don’t be shy, they’re not. Go on over to the fence and say hello to Pip and Dusty, leisure-loving creatures who prefer lounging in their private paddock to hauling carrots.
