When you visit Willen Lake and its surrounding parkland, you’re sure to hear the sounds of its rich and varied birdlife. But don’t be surprised if you also hear the sounds of chanting. Two of the park’s gems are the Peace Pagoda and neighbouring Buddhist Temple. Built in 1970 by monks and nuns of the Nipponzan Myohoji order, they are a symbol of world brotherhood. The temple houses a sculpture commemorating the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Wander among the 1,000 cherry trees planted in memory of those who lost their lives, and pin a peace message to the nearby One World Tree.
