Milton Keynes

Fenny Stratford

Seven miles down the road from Stony Stratford you'll find Fenny Stratford. As well as two beautiful walking routes, the town is known for an ear-splitting tradition that dates back to the 18th century. The Fenny Poppers are six small lead cannons that look like toby jugs and weigh 19 lbs each. Every year on November 11th, they’re stuffed with small amounts of gunpowder and newspaper, and fired at 2pm and 4pm. They’re also fired on other special anniversaries and occasions – in 1901 they were fired 81 times to mourn the passing of Queen Victoria. If you want catch a firing, don’t be late – the village folk have been doing it for so long there’s never a second’s delay!
