THE WINDMILL AND THE MATHEMATICS GENIUS

Nottingham

Green’s Windmill & Science Centre, Windmill Lane, Sneinton

You’ll find Green’s Windmill on a hill overlooking Nottingham city centre. Mr Green, the mill owner, died in 1829 and left it to his son George. In 1833, George became a student of mathematics at Cambridge and went on to become one of the preeminent scientists of his day. His studies into the behaviour of light, wave motion and the elasticity of materials are still influential today. The windmill was eventually abandoned and, in the 1970s, threatened with demolition. Staff at Nottingham University, recognising George Green’s genius, started a fund to save it, and the windmill was restored to working order. Today, you can observe the inner workings of Green’s Windmill, buy its organic flour and check out kid-friendly displays on George Green’s work.
