FLOATING CHURCH SERVICE

Berlin

Flussschifferkirche, Hohe Brücke 2

In Hamburg, there’s a church that floats on the water. A Protestant one to be exact, named the Flussschifferkirche. The fact that Sunday mass is held on the harbour in Hamburg is no surprise – the church has long been part of city life. It lies just across from the Speicherstadt in the harbour basin, on a coastal transport ship more than 100 years old, and has been used as a place of worship since 1952. From time to time, the church sways a bit, and the ships’ horns in the background aren’t quite what you’d normally hear during a service. But that’s what make this mass a real experience. If you have time, come on the fourth Sunday of the month when the service is held in Plattdeutsch (Low German).
