RED SPOTS IN THE ZIONSKIRCHE

Berlin

Zionskirche, Zionskirchplatz

Go to the Zionskirche and take a look around the church. Do you notice anything unusual? Take a closer look at the wooden floor of the gallery, where you’ll notice a few spots of red colour. It’s actually paint, which soaked through when members of the Umweltbibliothek political group were painting banners during the time of protest, before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The group was allowed to use the cellar of the church, among other things to paint their posters. They were campaigning against oppression and for freedom and equality. The Stasi secret police could have found them at any time if there hadn’t been a floorboard where their paint and brushes were hidden, and a carpet that could cover the posters in an emergency. That’s no longer there, but the red spots are still visible. Can you find them?
