THE CULT OF WATER AT THE HOLY WELL

The holy well of Sa Testa was discovered around the 1930s by a group of shepherds in search of water, and incidentally the ancient structure was closely related to such a search. Built between the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age, the construction was once a temple for the cult of water even in the Punic and Roman ages. Furthermore, the yard enclosed by stones laid in circle – used as seats during the ceremonies – is crossed by a drainage channel that leads to the stairs from which the well’s chamber, above the water sprout, was accessed. It’s no coincidence that the valley above which the sacred well of Sa Testa was built overlooked the sea.
