Fontana della Pigna - Piazza Cavour

The Fontana della pigna (fountain of the pinecone), with its two circular, white marble basins and fifteen sprouts, has really enchanted everyone. As written on the plaque on the side of the Renaissance fountain built over an existing Roman structure, Pope Paul III funded its restoration work after visiting the city. Leonardo da Vinci, also a visitor, was equally struck by the monument, especially the harmony of the water falling from the different jets. Last but not least, a dove chose to land on the pinecone fountain; no ordinary dove, but the famous walk-on in Fellini’s movie Amarcord.
