Tramontana, Grecale, Levante, Scirocco, Ostro, Libreccio, Ponente and Maestrale are the winds that blow onto Taranto. The Tarantese see them as cohorts and navigators who go from sea to sea have fear of them as much as desire for them. The eight winds are also the eight faces. Each one is directed towards the current it blows in, placed on the fountain of Rosa of the winds' central circle. Another jet of water in the middle of twenty one water jets to finish off the white marble work of art. An inscription on the base is there to remind whoever sees it that”we will sail bravely even with the the adverse twenty”
