Leonardo has been the witness of an extremely important part of the history of Taranto.
At first located in the wardroom of the homonymous battleship, the busto of the artist surrendered to sea along with the ship that sunk on a summer night between August 2nd and August 3rd in 1916.
Found on the sea floor a few years later, the statue was placed in Villa Peripato, but the truth about the causes of the ship’s explosion never came afloat. The fire that tipped over the docked boat started from the harbor’s arsenal and one of the theories suggests a sabotage by the Austrian navy.
