Taranto

Tempio Dorico - Via Duomo

The two columns next to the Ponte Girevole once belonged to the Temple of Poseidon, the most ancient place of worship in Magna Graecia. Given there are a myriad of Doric temples to visit in Sicily and Campania, the greatest of all is certainly the temple in Taranto, which throughout history has often been underestimated. Differently from the name given to it by a researcher, the sacred place was not dedicated to the god of sea, but rather to a goddess, most likely Persephone – the goddess portrayed in a statue found in Taranto and located in Berlin today.
In the beginning, only a column was visible, trapped inside the balcony of a nearby building. With an accurate cleaning and restoration job, the remainder of the ruin was also rightfully brought to life: around the 1970s, a second column – also completely hidden – was unveiled. Do not overlook this masterpiece!
