One of Viareggio’s distinguishing features is its two green lungs: Pineta di Ponente and Pineta di Levante (west and east pine groves), equipped to play sports, have a drink or something to eat, or simply to escape from the torrid summer heat.
The funny thing is that the Pineta di Ponente – planted in the mid-1700s to protect the city from the wind and sea – is that pine trees actually represent a minority of the plants present in the public park.
Hidden among the numerous tree varieties, there is a fascinating swan lake, as well as kiosks, pizzerias, clubs, and even a horse-drawn buggy!
