Strolling through the streets of Old Aberdeen is like stepping back in time. Rich in historical buildings, it is home to the University of Aberdeen, reputed to have the oldest medical school in the English-speaking world. Other architectural wonders include King’s College Chapel, one of two surviving Scottish medieval churches with open “crown” spires, and St. Machar’s Cathedral, one of the finest examples of a fortified church in Western Europe. Not forgetting the 14th-century Brig o’ Balgownie, a contender for the title of Scotland’s oldest surviving bridge.
