PAINTING, SCULPTURE AND DECORATIVE ARTS
Liverpool
Walker Art Gallery, William Brown Street
Did you know that the Walker Art Gallery houses one of the largest and most varied art collections in England, outside London? The best place to start is upstairs where a rich and stunning collection of early Italian masterpieces is on display (mostly 13th-16th century religious themes). The highlight of the later 16th century gallery is undoubtedly Hans Holbein’s famous portrait of Henry VIII. Several horse paintings by 18th-century Liverpool artist George Stubbs can be admired, as well as many other great works by Victorian artists. There are also interesting artefacts, sculptures, fashion items and some modern art to be enjoyed. Art lover or not, this is a beautiful gallery to visit with a nice ground floor café and gift shop.
